So, I just started my gig with Gogokid, and honestly I cannot stop raving about it enough. If you think this is a scam or unreal, I suggest to GO GO and try it for yourself. I felt compelled to make this blog, because I want more people to know about this amazing opportunity. I have so many friends that are sitting in a disgusting 9-5 desk job that hate their lives. I am convinced this is the way out for soooo MANY OF YOU in similar situations. Seriously, I don’t know how everyone is not trying out this job if you fit the qualifications. If you desire having a flexible schedule and staying at home, I REALLY recommend trying out Gogokid. Or if you are looking for a little side hustle, this is perfect because you are not required to work at any certain time. Gogokid is really popular for stay-at-home moms, or people like myself AKA digital nomads. 💻 This job allows me the flexibility of choosing my own hours and location (as long as the internet is stable). YES, this means I CAN WORK AT A HUT IN BALI IN PAJAMA BOTTOMS as long as I HAVE WI-FI! 😍
WHAT THE HELL IS GOGOKID?
As formally stated on the website, this is Gogokid’s mission:
“Gogokid creates a connection between children in China and the world by providing a global learning experience. Our mission is to foster our students to learn the English language as a tool, not as a goal, and to become individuals with creative and critical thinking skills.”
Here is my informal definition:
Gogokid is an online educational platform used to teach English to Chinese kids. Basically, it is a teaching job without all of the crappy parts about teaching: no early morning commute with hair-pulling traffic, no never ending grading, and no crazy boss.
WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS?
You must be able to legally work in Canada or the United States
You need to be a native English speaker
You must have at least a Bachelor’s degree, and if you have a TEFL that is even better (don’t worry if you do not have one, I didn’t)
Have a secure internet connection 💻
Gotta be enthusiastic, you are teaching 5-12 year olds after all.
This is not technically stated, but I think you really have to enjoy kids because honestly if not then this job will probably suck for you.
(NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A CERTIFIED TEACHER TO GET THIS JOB, I MAJORED IN POLITICAL SCIENCE AND WAS PLANNING ON DOING BUREAUCRATIC WORK.)
HOW DO I APPLY?
You can apply through this link and I will personally coach you through the process and send you my free guide I used for this entire process that got me hired:
you can apply through the normal link:
WHAT IS THE HIRING PROCESS LIKE?
Sign up for an interview with a demo (the interview process is about 30 minutes)
Attend the interview, do a 10 minute demo where the interviewer acts like a child, receive feedback
Wait 24 hours for the dreaded email (I personally got my congratulations email 2 hours after my interview)
VIOLA! YOU ARE HIRED. Submit the documents they ask for and then you can instantly open up time slots and start making $$$. 😀
WHAT DO I NEED FOR THIS JOB?
1. Some cheap, fun props. I went to the dollar store and picked up some flashcards with simple pictures and letters. I also handmade some props like this sock puppet! (make sure your background looks educational)
2. A good, noise canceling headset with a microphone. It is important to have the best sound quality, especially when you are trying to teach students new sounds. Click here to purchase a headset
3. A good computer. I use my MacBook Air and have no problems. Make sure your computer is in condition and not constantly breaking down.
4. PATIENCE. And a lot of it. Sometimes, the students may be a little hyperactive or just simply do not understand what you are trying to convey. Breathe and innovate ways that is easier for the student to learn.
5. LOTSA caffeine, especially if you are teaching in the USA. Sometimes I start working at 4 AM.😴 It can be a bit extreme. Get you some expresso and get prepared to make some $$$ CHA-CHING.
That is really about it.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET HIRED?
For me, this entire process was literally two days. One day I was unemployed, throwing a pity party and two days later I was teaching TEN classes. I was honestly amazed by the simplicity. Since Gogokid is a new platform, the hiring process is a little more simple right now. For the majority of people, I don’t think it would take any longer than two weeks.
SO, WHEN DO I START WORKING?
Pretty much right after you get hired. You fill out some documents, make an intro video, get verified, and then start working 😲
KIM, BUT ISN’T IT HARD TO GET BOOKINGS?
I was a little intimidated at first. I watched a bunch of youtube videos and read a lot of comments about how people struggle to get any bookings with online ESL teaching. I thought this was going to be my case. HOWEVER, I made my profile really stand out with a fun biography, pictures, and an engaging introduction video. And y’all I really believe this is what worked. I got bookings instantly! 👏 I actually regret opening up so many bookings because I was hardly getting any sleep my first week.
ALRIGHT, THIS SEEMS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE.
Alright, alright. So with every job there’s gotta be a few badddd things to complain about. And here is what I have found thus far:
Every time a student is taking a trial class and does not show up, you are required to stay for 15 minutes and you only get paid 60%. HOWEVER, if this is a core student (meaning they paid for the class) you will still get paid 100%— regardless if they show up.
Some students do not wanna stinkin’ learn
Sometimes you just get kids that do not give a darn about learning english. 🤷 The last thing they wanna do is sit down on a Saturday morning and learn the word “apple”. To be honest, I don’t blame them. Sometimes you’ll just get kids that wanna run around the house and act like a superhero. This job requires a lot of patience.
With any online job, this is a given. If it isn’t an internet problem on your side, it’s the student’s problem. If it is not the student’s problem, it is the system problem. Gogokid has been pretty quick to fix issues though.
Wonky working hours depending on where you are
Right now, I am in Texas. Beijing peak hours are 7-9 PM. Which is 5-7 AM for me right now. Yup. It’s a curse at first, and afterwards it’s a blessing when you realize you have the rest of the day after working and making some cash in your pajamas.
